BLS English 2
Mildenhall High Town 1

A massive game demanded a massive performance and BLS did not disappoint. Mildenhall were somewhat stunned by the intensity shown by BLS straight from the whistle. Kemp, Davies and Farrant were slick in their link up play and Aldahmash was always keen to chase down and pressurise all over the field. Piper pulled off his trademark one-on-one blocks when called upon which then allowed Kemp the opportunity to take the lead after a mesmerising run at the Mildenhall back line. Butler marshalled the back line impeccably and snubbed out much of Mildenhall's long ball play. Logan had a brief cameo to bolster the midfield towards the end of the first half helping to hold the narrow lead. The second half started just as positively for BLS with Farrant regularly using his strength to hold up play for Davies and Kemp as they surged forward. Mildenhall were rewarded for lifting their heads with a well taken goal from the tightest of angles. BLS were not content with a draw and could almost smell second place. Butler instigated the move of the match by bringing the best out of Davies on the left who returned the favour for Butler to keep his momentum and smash his first goal of the campaign home with ease. Mildenhall had nothing left to give and BLS were indeed unlucky not to finish with two or three more goals.
Man of the Match: Butler

BLS English 3
Monday Night Crew 2

BLS again found themselves behind against the run of play, but unlike last week remained patient and played the passing game that has put them within reach of second spot with a valuable game in hand. Kemp was the star of the show scoring his second hattrick of the season and was unlucky not to have six. Piper in goal was as agile as ever and is now close to securing cult status for his reflex saves at crucial moments in the game. Farrant and Butler were tireless in defence and in support of the front three. A fine all-round performance was capped by Davies who bossed the middle of the park and displayed some deft touches as did Brennan whose moment of brilliance was his perfectly weighted pass which agonisingly disected the Mondany Night Crew defence for Kemp's second. Aldahmash came on with 10 minutes to play and quickly found himself in on goal only for his well taken shot to be deflected for a corner. There were moments at 2-2 when BLS were a little overrun at the back but BLS have learned much in recent weeks and kept level heads to deal with the pressure and seal a great win in what is fast becoming a very colse and toughly fought tournament.

Man of the Match Adam Kemp

DWS 1

This was always going to be a tougher game than the form book suggested. DWS were again a physical side with some very handy additions. They approached the game with a lone forward and peppered BLS with long balls to exploit his pace. BLS took a while to adjust to this and could not get the breakthrough they were expecting. Davies was a welcome return in the heart of the midfield winning lots of second balls as he does so well. However, against the run of play it was a neatly chested long ball that was calmly tucked away by DWS that broke the deadlock before half time. BLS had not needed to chase a game throughout their magnificent unbeaten run which spans back to mid October 2009 - the best in the league. This was therefore a relativley new situation to BLS and was likely to challenge the resilience right through the team. Brennan and Kemp were both busy in the DWS half but neither as clinical as in previous games and both guilty of missing several half chances. The second half was niggly and scrappy but Ben Piper finally go the rub of the green managing an awkward angle to fire home and relax the nerves. Again this was 2 points lost but BLS preserve their unbeaten streak.

BLS English 2
Angel Hurricanes1

BLS struggled again to impress in the early exchanges of this game. Angel started with only 5 men and so deployed extreme caution thhroughout. BLS still displayed some good energy levels through Butler and Kemp depsite back to back games. It was a piece of luck that gave Angel a surprise lead after 10 minutes. A deflected shot fell to an unmarked player to shoot beyond the exerienced Buckner in goal. Straight from the restart BLS attacked in numbers but were guilty of trying too hard and overplaying to attempt to break through the bolstered 5 man defence. It was Logan whose neat turn inside and angled drive settled BLS into playing some much tidier football. With only 2 minutes left Piper kept his nerve and was rewarded for his persistence after hitting the woodwork twice earlier in the half. 4 points for an evening's work is a fair return for some untidy football on a skiddy surface.

BLS English 1
Thetford Wednesday 0

Back to the league this week and BLS came out on top in a closely fought battle. Thetford hit the woodwork early on as BLS were in disarray following a couple of team changes. However, towards the end of the first half BLS showed better compsure on the ball and began to do the simple build up play well. Farrant stepped up with his second in two games after some neat touches by Brennan and Butler and Bareham. The second half openend up and Thetford were continuing to look dangerous with their pace up front and fewer errors than the previous week. It was clear how they have been third for most of the season. The turning point in the game was the save of the season by Piper who somehow managed to save a point blank shot to the corner, seemingly goal bound. Disbelief led to dispondency in the Thetford ranks and BLS looked to increase their lead. However, Thetford defended in numbers and were hoping to snatch a draw on the counter. This nearly came in the last kick of the game when again Piper and this time his knees came to the rescue. Next week sees BLS against CAS who remain unbeaten at the top after 10 matches. For any chance of a top two finish this is a must win game.

Thetford Wednesday 0

Could this be the result that clinches a semi-final spot for BLS? Mathematically BLS could be pipped for the semis, but realistically they have already booked their place for finals day in March. Thetford are one place ahead of BLS in the Premiership so nothing was taken for granted. It was a clever turn and solo effort by Brennan that broke the deadlock after 10 minutes. This was soon followed up with one of the cleanest strikes of a ball you will ever see from a well worked corner. This was some way for Farrant to score his first goal for BLS. To be fair to Thetford, they passed the ball with some intricate play and were never afraid to play their football. However, Thetford did become impatient and tried more balls in over the top and over the tiring BLS defence. Piper in goal was resolute and was needed on a couple of occasions to prevent any comeback. BLS did withstand everything that Thetford had and mangaed several good counter attacks. Aldahmash was unluucky not to score with only 5 minutes left to play. All in all this was a fine team display and one that will give confidence leading into the second half of the season.

Man of the Match Rob Butler

BLS English 9
CSKA 1

Match Report

A Logan goal after only 10 seconds was the perfect start and things just kept getting beter and better. BLS English achieved their biggest win of the campaign and in doing this improved their goal difference greatly. There were braces for Piper and Davies while man of the match Kemp hit his first hat-trick. BLS English remain fourth in the championship in their inaugural season, thoguh are hot on the heels of both second and third. Next week is a double-header in the cup competition in which only six points will be sufficient for BLS English to progress into the semi-finals. Watch this space!

BLS English 4
CSKA BSE 2

Match Report

BLS notched their first points of the Bury St Edmunds 6-aside competition with a fine all-round performance, despite fielding a slightly weakened team due to several absences. BLS started the stronger but failed to convert some early chances. CSKA made BLS pay for this with a well-taken goal after some indecision in the back line for BLS. The response was emphatic with great approach play and neat interchanges between Mark Brennan, Ibrahim Aldahmash and Lee Bareham always there to link play in the middle. It was soon 3-1 and BLS were now enjoying some freedom which produced some good football. CSKA managed a rare break and a lucky corner from which they scored form a tight angle. BLS did not let this shake them and continued to pile on the pressure to force CSKA into some defensive errors. After a couple of missed opportunities, Brennan scored his first of the campaign to put the game beyond reach for CSKA.

Man of the Match Lee Bareham

Bury Amigos 3
BLS English 0

Match Report

BLS English kicked off their league campaign in style taking the game to Bury Amigos and forcing some early saves from their keeper ("Rhino"). Hungarian player Balint Szigeti had a great opportunity after neat footwork by Robert Davies in the centre, but could only manage to skim the post. Totally against the run of play the Amigos found some space down the left flank and managed an angled shot past Ben Logan in goal. The half time score remained 1-0, however, BLS English remained in buoyant mood after a good first half.

The second half opened up and Amigos began to run more with the ball, exploiting the space better than BLS. Two quick goals left too much for BLS to do, though never gave up. Ben Piper camped in the Amigos half for the last few minutes in a final attempt to get BLS on the scoresheet. The final wave of attacks were in vain with several efforts brilliantly saved by the Amigos goalkeeper.

The match ended 3-0 to the Amigos thanks mainly to the heroics of their keeper. Next week BLS play at 8.30 at Nowton Park against CSKA Bury and will be hoping for their first points of the season.
