BLS FC had an amazing first season in the Bury St Edmunds 6-aside tournament. After a slow start back in September 2009, BLS put together a 5-month unbeaten run to pick up two pieces of silverware: the Premier League Runners Up and Cup Winners medals. The new 2010 summer competition is now underway and results can be seen at the link below.

BLS fielded a much-changed side to the previous 2 weeks so their shape and discipline was to be crucial. 4Skins had been unlucky in recent fixtures narrowly losing by the odd goal in their last three games. Logan and Brennan were solid at the back though were guilty of drifting out of position on several occasions. During the early forrays Nicholls and Aldahmash in attack posed danger though could not hold enough of the ball to bring Davies in from midfield. The deadlock was broken on 10 minutes when a neat chip from Aldahmash from the right cleared the defence and dropped perfectly for Brennan to slide the ball home to mark his comeback appearance from a month out of the side. At one nil BLS looked very comfortable with 4Skins lacking any real incisiveness. Reardon in goal for BLS had hardly been tested throughout the first half despite BLS looking a little ragged at the back and gifting space unneccesarily in the last 5 minutes. The second half saw Brennan make some superb last ditch blocks and tackles to frustrate the 4Skins front line. Nicholls and Aldahmash were linking up better and came close on a few occasions. On 25 minutes, Davies made himself some space down the left for Logan to put him through for a trademark jink and left foot drive into the corner. Would 2-0 be enough with under 10 minutes to go? Ironically, BLS showed more nerves at 2-0 than with the one goal cushion. This led to some indecision with the marking at he back which gave 4Skins a close-range effort from a narrow angle to blast home leaving Reardon little chance. There were several last minute scrambles for BLS but without doubt deserved to extend their unbeaten run to three. With a crucial couple of cup games looming later in August, this is just the momentum that is needed.

Bang Bangs 0
A toughly fought contest left BLS feeling they had done enough to scrape this one. Though the referee was wearing a similar colour to BLS, he was doing them few favours. Disallowing Aldahmash in the second half was definitely the most curious of these. Nevertheless, BLS could have won the game on several other occasions with with Piper and Logan coming close. Farrant was always going to be a towering target man and looked dangerous throughout. However, support for him was often too slow or too distant forcing him to go alone. The greasy surface made things difficult for BLS especially so when choosing the long pass. When finally realising this, BLS did put some good positive moves together. The pick of these being instigated by Butler culminating in a Piper effort that saw both a lucky deflection and fingertip save from the Bang Bangs number 1 preventing him from getting on the score sheet. Piper and Butler thwarted some late efforts by Bang Bangs and restricted them to long range efforts. One of these needed a sublime fingertip response form new signing Reardon between the sticks. Next week 8.40pm against 4 Skins.

BLS English came out on top in this fiercely contested local derby and never really looked in danger of slipping up to a side that now props up the table after 8 weeks. It was a vintage Kemp performance that spurred on the oranges to their 4th win of the league season. This is not to say that he will be content with this as he would be the first to concede he should have had a double hattrick. The most glaring missd opportunity was towards the end of the first half after a pinpoint pass by Logan allowed Kemp to run on with only the keeper to beat. He chose power over precision ... the ball still has not been found - rumour has it it is somewhere near Long Melford. Aldahmash also had his chances and will be looking for a lot more compsure in front of goal next week. He did make up for not scoring by taking on some gritty defensive duties which summarised a great team effort. Piper made a cameo appearance outfield and hit the woodwork after seconds of being let out of goal. His experience showed and was able to boss the midfield picking out passes for fun. Butler also contributed well at the back with a fine return to the team, showing why BLS have missed him so much over recent weeks.

Hardly Athletic 1
BLS move up to 3rd in the Premier League already making it a better start than last season. However, the performance was only average and there was a distinct lack of unity in the side, which was mainly to blame for the lack of fluidity and overplay. Far too often BLS were caught on the counter attack with Athletic holding and releasing well to make BLS work hard at the back. Luckily Farrant was on form to quell much of the Athletic approach play. Logan also worked hard and never gave up depsite being nutmegged twice by the Athletic's least mobile player. Kemp again got BLS off the mark with that all crucial first goal thanks to clever play by Brennan and support from Davies. Kemp returned the favour after 10 minutes to give Brennan his first of the season despite only just passing a late medical. It did look as though BLS would go on to romp home with Kemp and Davies having chances to put the game beyond reach, however, full credit must be given to Athletic who continued to press and to use all their experience to eventually score from a rebound after a good reaction Piper save. The second half remained goalless, but Aldahmash had two great efforts that just flew over. His return to form comes at just the right time for BLS. BLS will need to improve on their shot to goal ration for the next two weeks which see them against top of the table Madrid in consecutive games.

4 Skins 1
BLS were keen to make amends for last week's defeat and to improve on the mid table position. A composed and at times lethargic first 10 minutes were fairly even and again BLS were exposed at the back mainly due to a tendancy to push numbers forward far too often. BLS were glad to have Piper back between the sticks and when he was called upon he did not disappoint. Farrant, Brennan and Kemp led the attack and had some early chances, though were lacking conviction. It was Kemp who got the breakthrough not long before halftime with a well placed shot, thanks to some solid support from Davies. This clearly settled the nerves and allowed BLS to play some more expansive football. The young legs of the opposition were surpsisingly weary in the second half and the experience of last season was showing for BLS. Davies again proved far too strong for the 4 Skins in the centre of the park and his cool head allowed Brennan the time and space to hit a superb outside of the boot curler, just skimming the crossbar. Soon after, a quick corner forced the 4 Skins defender to play from within his own area and the subsequent penalty was calmly slotted home by Farrant, sending the keeper the wrong way. Player Coach, Logan, came into the equation and was unlucky to allow 4 Skins in for a relatively simple goal, giving Piper little chance. Logan soon made up for his mistake by sending a defence splitting pass to Kemp to again give a two goal cushion. Aldahmash came on to add energy and flair to the game for BLS and it wasn't long until Kemp sealed a well deserved hattrick.
