The programme is intensive with 21 hours in the class and then afternoons and weekend visits to cities around East Anglia. On top of this, students will go to evening social activities and afternoon sports, drama and art sessions to involve everyone – all in English!

Our students come from all over the world and are of all ages. Whilst studying at the school, they stay with carefully selected local families. Staying with a host family gives them an unparalleled opportunity to fully dive into a new culture and the English language.

The experience is rewarding for both students and hosts alike. Students benefit enormously from chatting in English in a relaxed, natural situation, practising over dinner what they have learnt in class. For hosts, the benefits include:

the chance to meet students from all over the world

experiencing different cultures and traditions

the opportunity to share your traditions and cultures

swap culinary ideas!

the safety of accommodating an overseas student via a reputable school, rather than accommodating lodgers or tenants

an active, experienced and caring team of people to rely on for advice and support

flexibility of having short or long term students to fit in with your personal situation

We are committed to the highest standards of student care and support. Students stay from as little as one week up to a year in some cases, and our accommodation team takes great care in matching suitable students and hosts.

We always like to hear from new prospective host families – further information is available here, or please call Sally on 01284 765511 or email hosting@blsenglish.co.uk with any questions.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Derick 6.0 overall score
Chen 6.5 overall score

Derick (Hong Kong) and Chen (China) recently sat their academic IELTS after studying on the Intensive 23 hour programme. The programme consisted of Intensive General English in the mornings between 9.30 and 12.30 followed by intensive exam skills from 1.30 to 3.45. Daily homework and Friday IELTS test papers allowed Derick and Chen to quickly develop the skills necessary to perform well in the IELTS. The two BLS English students worked incredibly hard and were producing a lot of extra work for their teachers to check and comment on.

Scores of 6.0 and 6.5 will enable these two students to apply for courses at Colleges and Universities in the UK.

Everyone at BLS English wishes them very success in the future.

BLS English was delighted to welcome to Bury its first school group of 2013

13 Spanish students and their teacher, Eva Martínez, visited Bury from 20 – 27 January. The students, aged between 12 and 15, were from the IES Manuel Gutierrez Aragon school in Torrelavega in Santander, northern Spain. Their arrival was slightly later than planned because of all the snow. Many flights that day were cancelled, but fortunately theirs was still able to land. The students found our weather quite a shock and it was the first time they had seen so much snow!

The students were here to improve their English. For most, this was their first trip to the UK and their first opportunity to try speaking English in the real world. They had English lessons each day at the BLS Junior School on Springfield Road, with afternoon projects, visits to the town centre gathering information about Bury to present on their return to Spain. They explored the town – buying food and asking questions to stall holders at the Bury Market as well as having a traditional roast at the Wetherspoon’s Corn Exchange, visiting Bury Bowl and encountering squirrels for the first time in the Abbey Gardens!

English UK East is the newest regional association and the official launch was held at BLS English, Bury St Edmunds.

The group represents members from over several counties in the East of England, including Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Northamptonshire.

The association has around 20 members so far, including a university, FE colleges, a boarding school and private language schools including specialists in young learners.

The group intends to create a promotional website and run Fam trips to the region, as well as other marketing activities.

Why study in the English UK East region?

Association chair John Barnett says:

“There’s great historical and cultural interest in this area, with beautiful towns and cities including Bury St Edmunds, Norwich, Colchester and Ely. It’s a very non-industrialised area of the country which does set it apart. There’s a slightly different community here and students have a good opportunity to become part of it. It’s easier for them to make contact with local clubs and native speakers.”

Join BLS English to meet interesting people from all over the world

All BLS students become members of the BLS Social Club as soon as they step into the school. At BLS English we believe in creating an atmosphere that encourages and includes all students from all backgrounds and all countries. This is the philosophy of the BLS Social Club. When students meet interesting people and are socialising on a regular basis, they forget that they are actually improving their English at the same time. Learning is not just happening in the class rooms, but also in the evenings and at the weekends too.

September is the start of the academic year. We are lucky here at BLS that our adult classes have a fantastic mix of nationalities. It is quite normal for each class to have 10 or more different nationalities!

Great nationality mix

Courses on offer

Our students choose from Intensive or General English. Which one is right for you? BLS recommends that if you want to make serious progress you need to be in the class morning and afternoon. This also gives you the opportunity to explore the different exams on offer and perhaps work towards the IELTS.

Accommodation

Learning is from inside and outside the classroom. Immersion is the key. Host or residential accommodation will provide different ways of exploring the language and most importantly giving you the confidence to speak, listen and learn.

Social Programme

We will offer you a fun and varied activity programme during the year. Dinners, parties, barbeques, theatre, music and dance are just some of the ways we will help you meet other students and real British people. Bury St Edmunds is a friendly town where people do want to speak to you and learn about you and your country.

One regular activity is football; either for fun or more seriously in the Bury St Edmunds town competition. BLS English football team play weekly matches against other local teams and has had plenty of success. This week BLS won 2-0 thanks to goals from Rob and Ryan. This means BLS are now top of the league at the half way stage.

“The best time to make friends is before you need them.” (Ethel Barrymore)

“Friends are one of the most important things in life. They are always there if you need help for example when you are in trouble or you need advice. It doesn’t matter where they are from, which religion they have or which lifestyle they prefer. The main thing is that you can rely on them, also in the middle of the night.

I was so glad to make international and German friends at the great mixed classes at BLS after my arrival in the UK. I enjoyed to live at Springfield House (nice rooms and comfortable beds!) and to join the lessons. They were a lot of fun and humorous and the biscuits / drink in the break were a pleasure. If you were in need for help- just ask! All at BLS love questions!

The school gives its students also a wide choice of curricular activities. For example, we had great fun to improve our English while learning more about someone else’s lifestyle, their eating habits or the Asian tee at an evening event at Springfield House or while meeting up for a Rugby game. They also plan trips to other towns and it was a shame that I was always prevented. You are never bored at BLS if you had a look on the black board!

After my short time at BLS I can say that it is a wonderful school for improving your English, meeting different people and enjoying your life. I would love to come back again to finish my course but my time is too rare.”

Junior Syllabus

The focus is on grammar and communication. We cover all of the main skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening using the most modern resources. Our aim is to significantly boost every student’s English in a short time ready for school or university in September.

Evening Social Programme

There are 2 evening activities arranged and supervised by BLS staff each week of the summer programme.
If you can pronounce correctly every word in this poem, you will be speaking English better than 90% of the native English speakers in the world. After trying the verses, a Frenchman said he’d prefer six months of hard labour to reading six lines aloud.

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it’s written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation’s OK
When you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
And enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,
Doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
Neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
And then singer, ginger, linger,
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very,
Nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.
Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
Though the differences seem little,
We say actual but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer.
Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Dull, bull, and George ate late.
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific,
Science, conscience, scientific.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover;
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice;
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.
Petal, panel, and canal,
Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four.
Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean.
Doctrine, turpentine, marine.
Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary.
Crevice and device and aerie.
Face, but preface, not efface.
Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.
Pronunciation (think of Psyche!)
Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won’t it make you lose your wits,
Writing groats and saying grits?
It’s a dark abyss or tunnel:
Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.
Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!!!
