Your English Level
Adult students will be tested before arrival wherever possible. We will advise you how many levels are running before you book. There may only be one level running at quieter times of the year. You will also have a chat with the Director of Studies (or assistant) on your first day. The academic team will monitor your performance and progress in discussions with the teaching team and from weekly class tests.
Welfare
Supervision policy for 16 and 17 year olds studying on adult courses is found here.
Your First Day
On your first day, you will be shown around your BLS centre (adult or junior) and the town. New adult students will speak with the Director of Studies (Robert White) to see how you feel about your class level and any other issues. You can also discuss your exam options and work experience or paid work options for those who are eligible. The BLS welfare team will speak to you during the early part of your course to check you are settling in and to help with any problems.
Activities
The activity programme is a very important aspect of your course. You can sign your name against any activity you would like to try. There will be the opportunity to visit nearby cities of interest each weekend. London, Cambridge, Colchester, Norwich, Ipswich and Newmarket are all possible. You will also explore the local restaurants and night life. The idea is that you sign up on the student activity board and pay as you go. There will be a student rep or Intern to accompany you and support where needed. The activities will help you settle in and meet other students from different countries. They will also support your English learning in a more relaxed setting. We suggest you sign up for as many as possible. Some are free!
